The Caribbean Plate is in the middle of a tremendous readjustment of all the landmasses that surround it.  That is, the plate itself isn’t moving all that much but North America and South America are very much on the move and all three are being shoved westward by the widening Atlantic Rift which has had many earthquakes this last month, too.  All the sections of the Caribbean Plate have had major earthquakes this week except for one section: the eastern front where many volcanoes are, is temporarily quiet.  Like all rift zones, this plate is lined by volcanoes and we should expect some activity with these in the near future.IRIS Seismic Monitor – Recent Earthquakes

The red circle in the Pacific Ocean is a 10k 5.7 quake.  The white circle is the Caribbean Plate.  The Cayman trough is the deepest trough in this region of the earth.  Smaller quakes are along the southern border of this plate.  But the major shift is in along the Cayman Trough.

The Cayman Trough, or Cayman Trench, also called Bartlett Deep, or Bartlett Trough, is a complextransform fault zone pull apart basin which contains a small spreading ridge on the floor of the western Caribbean Sea between Jamaica and the Cayman Islands.^[1] It forms part of the tectonic boundary between the North American Plate and the Caribbean Plate. It extends from the Windward Passage, going south of the Sierra Maestra Cuba toward Guatemala. The transform continues onshore as the Motagua Fault which cuts across Guatemala and back offshore under the Pacific Ocean where it intersects the Middle America Trench subduction zone. The relatively narrow trough trends east-northeast to west-southwest and has a maximum depth of 7,686 meters (25,216 ft); it is the deepest point in the Caribbean Sea. Within the trough is a slowly spreading north-south ridge which may be the result of an offset or gap of approximately 420 kilometers (260 mi) along the main fault trace.

During the Eocene the trough was the site of a subduction zone which formed the volcanic arc of the Cayman Ridge and the Sierra Maestra volcanic terrain of Cuba to the north as the northeastward moving Caribbean Plate was subducted beneath the southwest-moving North American Plate, or as some researchers contend, beneath a plate fragment dubbed the East Cuban Microplate.^[2]

As of 2008 the Cayman Trough has not been explored; a UK team from the National Oceanography Centre in Southampton (NOCS) equipped with an autonomously controlled, robot submarine, are set to begin mapping the full extent of the trench and finding the volcanic vents on the ocean floor.^[3]

The trough hasn’t been explored?  You can bet, there will now be a race to go check this place out!  And like all subduction zones, it is where tsunamis lurk.  I would suggest the entire Caribbean be on the alert of this very possibility.  Especially since virtually the entire population lives right smack next to the ocean.  Human beings are very drawn to the sea.  Some evolutionary theorists believe that we descended from a small clan of hominids which survived the great die off of 76,000 years ago by living on the shores of Kenya facing the Indian Ocean.  There is great fear that global warming will cause the ocean to rise and flood these places.

But what really floods and destroys civilizations are tsunamis which are caused by earthquakes and volcanoes. Gradual sea rises are fairly easy to adapt to.  Sudden onslaughts of seas is impossible to even hinder.  And come with very little or no warning.  The Cayman Trough is very dangerous because it is hemmed in by lots of islands and is right in the middle between two major continents that are very much moving and in the case of South America, rotating.

Since this plate also happens to be near the equator in the tropical zone, it has an extremely high birthrate in this entire region.  And coupling this with very active geological factors we get the potential for human tragedy as we see unfolding in Haiti, one of the ten poorest nations on this earth.  Since James Monroe declaration in 1823 that the US controls the Western Hemisphere and has the right to interfere with any and all Western Hemisphere colonies and nations, we have applied this doctrine with draconian fervor. Indeed, the roots of US imperialism is from this doctrine.

Right now, we are once again invading Haiti.  The Haitian people are accepting this…for the time being…because of the literal collapse of their entire society.  Giant Tsunami Destroyed Ancient Minoan Athens « Culture of Life News is the story I did last December.  There is a belief that the Thera volcanic eruption caused a massive tsunami to sweep over significant parts of the island of Crete.  Crete was already in ruins from the massive earthquake that shook the entire Eastern Mediterranean Sea. The tsunami swept away everyone who was trapped in the rubble as well as many survivors.  The Cretan empire was utterly destroyed.  Once verdant fields were contaminated with sea salt.

We saw this again, in the Great Boxing Day Quake and Tsunami.  The rebuilding of the city of Acheh is quite rapid.  This is no paradox: the tsunami that killed most of the city’s residents also swept away most of the earthquake damage.  In the case of Haiti, there was no tsunami and so rebuilding will be much, much more complicated.  In this culture, it will be even more jerry rigged building than previously since the poverty level has now increased greatly.

Right now, today, the population there is being swept away in a tsunami of human fear and homelessness.  They have to go somewhere and the aimless wandering in the streets has become increasingly focused on fleeing the entire area and indeed, eventually, the entire island.  This is quite understandable.  The place has been pretty much turned into a desert by misguided, malicious and mismanaged use.  That is, it is a small island that hosted a totally out of control birth process that went ballistic when vaccinations were introduced there in the last 60 years.

Thousands of Haitian people, most of them homeless, have flooded the port, hoping for a ticket to hope, on board a ferry, being paid for by the Haitian government….

…”The government gave us 1500 gallons of fuel to go back to Jeremie to evacuate more people,” said Roger Rouzier, director general of Marinetec, the ferry boat owner….

…They would row about a mile, to the Trois Rivieres ferry, which was docked at the other end of the port. The owner docked it far away so that people could not board it, while it sat awaiting fuel from the government….

…”No one is helping us with crowd control here. No one. We don’t have any help from no one. Even from the government,” said ferry owner, Roger Rouzier….

…CNN watched as one lone Haitian coast guard vessel tried to approach the ferryboat to curtail the rowboaters, but they were quickly overpowered by the sea of people fleeing. The ferry’s owner told CNN his ferry is licensed to carry 600 people, but on the last trip to Port Jeremie, there were over 3000 onboard.

The sensible thing to do is flee.  But fleeing has its dangers: people crowd into ships and they sink.  The entire Caribbean has been sending out many waves of economic refugees for quite some time.  The main reason the US has given aid to Haiti in the last 25 years as been to stop the endless boats floating to Florida.  With this aid, we can then ship back to the Haiti hell hole, anyone who tries to escape. The US debate about birth control has insured that we won’t help Haiti face reality and begin to ship out lots of birth control materials and at the same time, end the human crisis there.  For Haiti has over 9 million people and even if 500,000 died in this great tragedy, this is still probably less than 5% of the population.

Jamming many millions of people into earthquake zones seems pretty common.  One of the more populated places on earth are the ‘Ring of Fire’ countries like Japan and Indonesia, for example.  And of course, California.  California is particularly sad: it is rapidly moving northwards much faster than the neighboring continent.  That is, all of the Baja California sector to the border of Oregon is a separate landmass that is moving totally at odds with a major continent.  And it slithers along the leading edge of the North American plate which, in turn, is being shoved violently away from Europe and Africa.

We are in an El Nino year which means lots of storms in California.  The first half of this El Nino saw virtually no storms because the Atlantic Oscillation went into a super-cold phase for 45 days.  But now is returned to normal so the weather for El Nino is now hammering California.  This is causing landslides.  The mountains along the San Andreas are not like the mountains where I live.  We have very, very few landslides here due to the way the earth was compacted by giant glaciers which crushed this part of the earth for thousands of years during the previous Ice Age cycles (we are still very much in an Ice Age cycle system!).

California’s hillsides are loose and are regularly shifted and shook up by massive earthquakes.  Couple this with fires during the Santa Ana winds periods denuding hillsides and mix in lots of very foolish humans insisting on building in these balmy weather places and you get disasters.

We saw the houses collapse in Haiti.  The ones in California have strict building codes yet houses there get wiped out all the time by floods, landslides, fires and of course, earthquakes.  The loss of housing in my area are due mostly to either human error or on rare occasions, storms.  But the ongoing destruction of housing in California is epic.  And hideously expensive.  The other area that gets hammered too is Hurricane and Tornado Alley in the south and midwest.  But California gets everything, quite often.

Now, global warming people tell me that they fear loss of life if the climate changes.  I would suggest putting California in the deep freeze so it won’t attract people who love hot weather.  Of course, we can’t do this.  But people complaining about the dangers of this or that should realize, humans LOVE places that are warm EVEN IF they are HIDEOUSLY dangerous.  Totally deadly dangerous!   End of story.  Millions of people have been rapidly killed by Mother Nature repeatedly this last 100 years, nay, the last million years and the vast majority of them were in warm places and the people chose to live near the oceans.

Good lord, the two places most likely to blow out are right next to the two biggest population centers of California!  Any sane person would pack their bags and leave.  But no one will.  People go suddenly passive when true catastrophe stares in their faces.  We see on TV  what happens when a very major quake occurs.  Previous 7 mag quakes in California were bad but if we get an 8 mag or worse, the truly terrible 9+ mag sort, even sturdy systems can collapse.  In the case of LA, the water system could vanish pretty fast.  For most of LA’s water is near to or crosses the San Andreas.

According to a release from UC Berkeley: The researchers conclude that the increased rate of tremors may indicate that stress is accumulating more rapidly than in the past along this segment of the San Andreas Fault, which is at risk of breaking like it did in 1857 to produce the great 7.8 magnitude Fort Tejon earthquake. Strong quakes have also occurred just to the northwest along the Parkfield segment of the San Andreas about every 20 to 30 years. Added Nadeau: We’ve shown that earthquakes can stimulate tremors next to a locked zone, but we don’t yet have evidence that this tells us anything about future quakes. But if earthquakes trigger tremors, the pressure that stimulates tremors may also stimulate earthquakes.

The maps of earthquakes this week shows a daisy chain of minor 4-5 mag quakes along the entire San Andreas except for the ‘locked’ section.  Now that the Caribbean Plate has lurched into a new position and a series of quakes right off of this plate in the Pacific shows that the Pacific Plate’s own deformations along the entire Central-North American front is being rapidly rearranged.  I predicted this after the Great Quake in Indonesia.  I said, for five years or so, the entire planet will see major shifts and thus, big earthquakes.  Below are some pictures of water systems serving LA:

The LA water duct below is very vulnerable.  The Salton Sea was created by an earthquake many years ago.  This can happen again…nay, WILL happen again.

Ground rupture in Taiwan

Here is a photo of a dam/highway collapse during an earthquake in Taiwan.  LA has a number of dams in the hills and mountains that rise above LA like a rock and dirt tsunami.  And these are vulnerable in earthquakes.  All dams are vulnerable to earthquakes which is why they are dangerous in earthquake zones and this emphatically includes all the dams in the center of the US which are vulnerable to any New Madrid-type quake in that sector.

The problem isn’t the dam breaking itself but sudden movement of land cascading into the dam’s lakes and thus, causing a mini-tsunami that then can overtop or destroy the dam or even just running around one side of the dam and then eating away the earth there, releasing billions of gallons of water and also, cutting water supplies to LA which would be unable to fight fires in a major earthquake.  We see from the mess in Haiti that a major rearrangement of the continental material might not be just one quake but could trigger a week or even a month’s worth of auxiliary quakes near and far.  And LA itself is fractured all over the place and is a very complicated geographical entity.

And as we watch Haitians flee, imagine many millions in Southern California trying to get out with the highways broken and no water!  As I keep pointing out, we live on a very active planet that has a rather unstable climate.  And if people really are seriously worried about staying alive, they must choose wisely.  And this is the last thing we want to do.  We want to have our cake and eat it too.  This is also why I say no sane environmentalist would live in California.  They would leave. I left.  I left talking rather loudly about ecological disaster there.  Since then, the population has tripled.  And people who ‘love ecology’ seem very eager to live there and then complain about the environment getting ruined.

Well, my grandfather used to complain bitterly about 60 years ago about all those ‘dang’ people moving to California and ruining perfectly fine gazing by building in the LA basin 50 years earlier.  You see, he had lived there over a century ago.  And hated all the changes and in particular, all the people moving in.  Well, Haiti is going to empty out but this won’t fix things since the birth rate will continue to soar.  And California will see even more millions move into this geological and climate disaster zone.  So don’t give me any stuff about ‘millions will die’ if this or that happens.  Humans LOVE living in deadly areas.  Just like we love to drive fast cars on slippery roads as fast as possible.
