We just had a major mine explosion in America. This mine produced coal which was being burned to produce electricity mostly for the South. A lot of this is used to air condition houses and businesses. I remember when virtually no one had air conditioning so that the few places in the south that did have this, would advertise it. People didn’t want to stay home to watch movies, it was too hot. But they went to air conditioned movie theaters.

The epic flow of people to the South happened only after air conditioning became the norm. Super-hot places became the hot place to be thanks to coal being used as energy production. The US must use coal this way because our southern suburban lifestyle is very energy expensive. And we can’t import energy, we already import immense amounts of energy and this is bankrupting the US.

Taxing energy directly won’t fix this. Fixing this is actually very easy: change building standards! Houses in NY must have walls at least 7″ thick if you include all parts of this. But in the south, they are not this thick. And on top of it, few buildings are built with the sun in mind. The direction of windows should be fixed via housing code laws but this isn’t being done at all.

Taxing us won’t fix this, either. Indeed, like the ancient British window tax, it will make things worse, not better. Taxes, in this fashion, are always bad. Sometimes the most simple solution is the best.
Thick walls and some white paint would go a long way in saving energy.
Think Greece with thick stone walls, whites houses and blue doors.
Forget the climate we have no control over it. Who believes we can sign a deal that will cap warming to 2 degrees? It´s just silly.
Carbon trading here in Europe ment that price of electricity was doubled and all the money/credits was given to the polluters for free. A tax would have been great compared to that.
If we really want to save the planet we should be talking about how to cap human population on earth.
Anything we save will be gobbled up by population growth. Nothing will be achieved.

The Brit could have found loads of fodder in his own country. But the money was in America.
This country is in a delicate time and its citizens are beginning to show wild behaviors. And of course the Media is tone deaf and not paying attention to the general emotions of the mob right now. They can’t keep kicking a population that is already feeling inadequate and also going broke. That will unleash horrors.
But heck, who am I to stand in the way of cheap anti-American jabs as the beast goes down. There is plenty to criticize about this country but food is the very last subject right now that deserves the spot light.

In regard to Jamie Oliver and the Food Revolution, he already had a go at British school food in a series called Ministry of Food.
What happened in the UK was that when the series was first broadcast, Jamie was rubbished. Six months major changes had been been brought in.
The whole point is educate children about food. It is quite surprising how many children have no real experience with food. Tomato sauce is not a vegetable. We have the same problem in Australia so I am not pointing fingers.
I have grown a fair amount of my own food most of my life, even in the city. I’ll never forget the lady who went to a talk I was giving about ‘good eggs’ who looked at my comparison of a good and a bad egg: the good egg has a golden yolk and the whites don’t run at all. While a bad egg from a sick hen is yellow and runny.
‘Your eggs look sick,’ she said. ‘They aren’t yellow. They are that funny color. ‘ I asked her to taste the difference (good eggs are delicious!) and she said, ‘Are you trying to poison me?’
That’s a good example about the good egg and bad egg. Sometimes things are so screwed up that people like the bad because they are so used to it and know not any difference.
I was thinking today about what an inflationary economy (fiat currency) does to people’s perception of what is good and bad in their economy. No one knows from what is good or bad anymore. Many think without inflation an economy would collapse and they can’t figure out really what they are making compared to everyone else. Eventually, me thinks, only the bankers know and take and take and take from the ignorant until they can’t take any more. Obfuscation is the banker’s sword and is the bane of all the capital in the world.
All religious groups start out as spiritual independence movements and, unfortunately, end up corrupt. Then some people look around and say, “Hey, this isn’t enlightened, this is corrupt” and start a resistance that ends up becoming corrupted. And so on.
As far as worshipping Mother Nature goes, I am not on great terms with Mother Nature at the moment. She can be a real bitch, in fact.

The way to cap population has been well discussed at the highest levels. Both the Bilderberg Group and the Club of Rome think tanks have concluded that population is a problem that must be resolved, by some means. They are factually correct that population growth (and other growths or declines) is a very serious problem. The biggest issue is how to resolve the problem. This is a tough concept to deal with. And religion is right square in the middle of it!
The Limits to Growth book by Donella Meadows, et al came out in 1972. The research reported in this book and other later books were sponsered by the Club of Rome. I remember it well. The stock market dropped about 10 percent the week it came out.
The original Limits to Growth book concluded that many world factors were on hockey stick patterns. They started the modern notion of limitations. They basically concluded that, more or less, growth must be drastically limited, and stop altogether in some sectors, in order to reach a sustainable world. Failure to deal with the major issues would result in general population collapse possibly within the next 25 to 75 years.
A followup in 1975 updated the predicted timetables, and rethought the general population collapse. Basically, the new 1975 book, by different authors, concluded that population collapse would most likely be segregated between the haves and the have nots. They suggested that the haves would simply dominate the have nots with power and take control of the resources, at the expense of survival of the have nots. Does this sound familiar?
I have always felt the original Limits to Growth reflected fairly benign scientific research, that addressed some general concepts on the problems facing growth in many important sectors. But, today, when I went to their website

to refresh my memory, it appears they may have morphed more toward a political agenda. (They are all pumped about limited global warming, but not much said on other critical issues.) They are much more open than Bilderbergers.
Elaine has discussed the exponential (hockey stick) curve. She has pointed out the inevitable crash that will occur if the hockey stick sharply turns upwards with no controls or restraints are imposed. If these growth curves are allowed to continue without restraint, bad outcomes can eventually be expected.
Yet, there is virtually no action taken to address the critical issues. The only actions taken tend to involve band aids and “get rich quick” schemes. I believe most of the inaction is rooted in politics and religion. And religion is the stepchild of politics or vice versa. Religion again steps in the way through its typically unyielding adherence to doctrine among so many adherents. Religion and politics, and the cultures so powerfully influenced by them, tend to have an adverse impact on the thinking and problem solving processes required to tackle these great and complex growth issues. They impose such an overwhelming adherence to ancient traditions and attitudes which prevents society from even considering the modern issues. They also interfere with the critical thinking skills which are needed to effectively come to grips with the real issues and develop reasonable solutions for the most critical issues.
