Another Big Blizzard, Another Polar Vortex Cold Wave: This Is A Classic 1970’s Winter

The unusually cold, bitter winter continues with barely a pause.  We had some above freezing days briefly here in upstate New York but it is back into the zero degree refrigerator for the next week.  A big snowstorm is raging across the nation and NYC already had significant snow this week and will be hammered yet again.  We are expecting over a foot of snow here on my mountain.  The sneers about ‘it is only WEATHER’ has finally begun to fade as severe cold grips entire continents showing us how Mother Nature disregards computer projections when it comes to solar activity and volcanoes both of which have a huge effect on the weather with the sun being one of the biggest, most absolute driver of weather change.

Massive volcanic eruption kills at least 16 people as toxic clouds hamper rescue efforts in Indonesia and in Ecuador there was another eruption.  This will make it colder and more snow in the northern hemisphere.  The el Nino events which has already pretty much vanished, won’t appear any time soon if these eruptions continue.  SpaceWeather.com — News and information about meteor showers, solar flares, auroras, and near-Earth asteroids: we are at the solar maximum so there finally has been some sun spot activity.  Today, there is a significant solar storm:

Deep Freeze: Was the Polar Vortex Really the Cause? – weather.com explains how this ‘mysterious’ polar surge really wasn’t due to the polar vortex moving southwards suddenly.  Of course, the story that there was this one-time ‘polar vortex’ causing super cold weather which was due to ‘it being too hot in the stratosphere’ is downright silly since our below zero surges began before Thanksgiving and have pulsed southwards every other week since then with yet another super cold surge this week and I presume, this will continue to the bitter end of winter whenever that is.

The groundhogs all said we will have at least six more weeks of winter and I trust a groundhog a lot more than a human meteorologist.  Natural gas soars as cold grips nation; 50% higher than last year at this time.  According to energy dealers, if we have a cold April (and I am betting on this) it will cause huge financial pain to people living in cold regions.  Liberal websites have opted to pretty much ignore this winter and keep up the storyline, ‘We are heating to death’.  Here is a sad example:  How rainbows and oil slicks help to illustrate the greenhouse effect | The Raw Story

Not shy at all, Raw Story uses the words ‘global warming’ rather than the colder ‘climate change’.  The author, , whines about all the myths made up to counter the global warming story.  The comments from readers are even sadder.  I am aghast at how ‘liberals’ who claim to love humanity, are brutally vicious when sneering about people freezing to death or paying super high energy costs due to incredibly cold, brutal winters.  Basically, the global warming gang wants us all to die via freezing to death.  And this is killing the liberal movement.  The cruel desire to freeze people to death is very unappealing to put it mildly.

It is horrible. Just like I warned the liberal left to not idolize Trayvon who was a troublesome teen seeking to be a criminal thug as his life goal, clinging to global warming while millions and millions of people across thousands and thousands of miles are freezing cold, is insane.  And very alienating.  Some comment such as ‘Our computer projections were way off!’ and ‘Wow, we should worry equally about a possible Ice Age!’ would go a long ways to saving the left from utter annihilation.

As it is, the left has staked its claims and sticks to these even in the face of obvious failure.  Here is a desperate rearguard action trying to convince people that Cold weather ‘doesn’t undermine global warming science’ -from the Brit Telegraph.  It seems that a number of sane Scientists reject claims of record cold being caused by ‘global warming’ – Time Mag. blamed ‘polar vortex’ on ‘global cooling’ in 1974.  Wash Post Throws Cold Water on Idea that Global Warming Is Causing Record Cold: ‘It’s still heavily debated…Elizabeth Barnes of Colorado State disputed the link’.

▶ Bad weather batters Europe – YouTube: heavy snowfalls, blocked roads, 4 feet in places, falling.  I recall the ice polar bears carved by protestors at the Copenhagen Climate meetings.  Living polar bears will thrive this year in many places at this rate.

Salon, Slate, Raw Story, Huff Po……leftist loons with s–t for brains.
Thanks for information on Volcanoes and weather.
For a laugh I will skim the raw story.

Hope you are well thru this brutal winter.

I spoke to someone in eastern Montana y’day. She said she considered the winter there mild.

Raw Story, unlike Popular Science, allows comments! Who would have thought a lib publication would allow freedom of speech on their dime?

This is from a few sources, and I can not prove all of this…but here goes:

ELAINE: Do you actually read my blog???

The GOP spends trillions on useless wars and that is OK? Obama did spend money to revive the economy wrecked by Greenspan and Bush. Did you want people to starve or have no jobs at all????

  3. Arctic outflow has reached the west coast,-5C tonight on Vancouver Island.
Looks like a week of this.
Not as bad as in 95 I think it was when we had minus 20 C for 2 weeks and we had Snowy owls hanging out in the back 40 who had come down from the north.
    Keep warm everyone.

  4. JimmyJ

@Peter C: -5C in Victoria BC is getting down there. Hard on the street people who migrate there for typically warmer weather.

Up on BC’s Nechako Plateau we’ve been down to -25C or so at night with forecasts threatening below -30C. Of course in the 1970s and 80s we had weeks of -35C and spots down to -50C occasionally. We haven’t seen anything like that since.

  5. Ziff house

Jimmy nice to hear from the hinterland, a bit cold here as peter says but nothing like the 70’s yet, howling winds and snow drifts .

  6. Jim R

    Obviousman is obvious.
    Concern Troll is concerned.
    Global Warming is Global.
    Everything else is just weather.

If you still have ice on your roof this coming July, then we have a problem. You might consider a lower latitude/altitude then. But for now, it is winter on Mount Airy.

And, as I have said before, I agree that financial fraud will not cure GW. … It is just another thing that we will have to endure, along with many natural things. A cure may be on the way for the financial fraud, by the way: depression.

  7. Some AGW fans are freaking out now as Arctic ice that they predicted would be gone in 2015 is building back up,including thicker multiyear ice.
None of them realizes the danger of another ice age which could start just with a trigger like the arctic vortex and some volcanoes.Temperature records show the transition happens quickly over decades not centuries,
Jimmy.. had to google Nechako to see where you were!
Pan for any gold up there?

  8. They cling to a particular narrative because they want political action. What’s clear is that the weather is not normal. If anything’s going to be done about that, in a democracy, there might need to be a simple narrative with a simple prescription.

I have more faith in people’s ability to understand things, so I’d like the mainstream discussion to be more scientific. But I’m probably naive.

  9. CK

So it is 2pm in Philly on the day of the icy rains. PECO says approx. a half a million residents are without power ( I am one of them). The outside temp is a balmy 34F and so the ice is melting a wee bit in preparation for refreezing this evening. Some middle class union members are going to make a nice chunk of change in overtime bringing the power grid back on line over the next two weeks. As it becomes more and more obvious that the civilization that was built between 1850 and 1950 can no longer be obtained by the current denizens of that husk, it behooves them as can, to take what measures they can to insulate themselves from the various grid failures. I wish I had a backup generator franchise come next week and for the three months thereafter.
After 120 days those without power today will have forgotten this winter …
300 days from now they will remember again but until then it will be global warming carbon tax trades Goldman Sachs screws you without lube again time.
    Balmy 34.
    After Sandy,

  10. CK, the power went out here last summer as well as during the winter. It’s just that it was flooding instead of snowing. Maybe we should just start to think of our era as The Environment Strikes Back.

  11. emsnews

We lived for ten years with virtually no electricity or anything more modern that 1880.

It isn’t impossible but requires a lot of forethought and care such as trimming the wicks of lanterns when it is still daylight and chopping and stacking firewood or tending the hearth fires as well as cooking on a wood stove, etc. While on a very cold mountain with some of the harshest winters ever after Pinatubo blew up.

  12. CK

As much as I adore the fantasy idea of living like my great great Neanderthal ancestors did; the actuality of it blows. I had done enough firewood splitting in the 60’s to fill my need for that activity at least until 2100.
@Steve: We have now enjoyed 5 multi day power outages in 18 months, the last was Sandy until yesterday. PECO suspects that power might be back Sunday for most of its customers.

  13. Luc

It is amazing how much the media is ‘into’ spreading the AGW hoax. I appreciate yr ‘weather updates’. Y’day, for a joke, I read thru USA Today.
Sure enough there was a tale of ‘Yes its cold but theres still AGW’.

It mentioned the tired ‘climate isnt weather’ riff. Then notes ‘its hot in Australia now’…well its summertime there now! And how does that prove AGW IF weather isnt climate? I am so tired of the so called ‘news’. And the Carbon Credit scam is criminal.
This conflating of ‘warming-AGW-climate change- carbon-carbon credits’ would be humorous except 70% of people interviewed believe it.
    [down form 90%].

  14. emsnews

Yes, when severe cold hammers a huge continent not once but repeatedly all winter long, the fact that some tiny spot on the other side is warmer than usual is ‘local weather’ whereas severe sub zero cold covering a huge part of the northern hemisphere is ‘climate’.

As I keep pointing out, the key is to watch where glaciers ruled most of the last 2.5 million years, namely, North America. Not Siberia. Also, Northwestern Europe is glacier-prone, too.

So if these parts have very cold winters, this may be a warning to us that another Ice Age looms.

  15. DeVaul

For added stupidity, my local news weather forecast (basically, just a crap shoot) had a trivia question for viewers:

Will this summer be hotter than normal?

    A) Yes, it will be much hotter than normal.

    B) It will only be slightly hotter than normal.

    C) No, it will be pretty much the same.

There was no “option” to answer that it will be colder than normal or even the same as last summer. Orwellian.

I wonder if this stupid question was asked on other stations around the country to gauge the general public’s perception of global warming?

  16. Luc

Elaine, did you listen to the SOTU speech? and…..
