Thanksgiving Snowstorm On My New York Taconic Mountain

global warming extremely cold snowy thanksgiving 2014

We didn’t have anyone over for Thanksgiving because there was this blizzard.  This entire month aside from maybe three days, has been well below freezing and it feels like January.  We had a lot of snow and it didn’t stop until Friday morning.  This wasn’t a light, fluffy snow.  It was as dense as cement and very hard to snowplow.  I had to plow out the road six times to clear it off.  First plowing was the top 6″.  And had to use chains on the tires and 4W low drive.  Then the sun came out and I baked some cookies today.  Next weekend, if it doesn’t do anymore global warming, I will have a delayed Thanksgiving for everyone.

even furry Panda keeps indoors Thanksgiving 2014

Even very furry Panda refused to go outside.  The cats all lay with their stomachs facing the fireplace to heat their furry tummies.  Luckily, just hours before the storm, I spent 8 hours chopping and moving and stacking several cords of firewood.  This was much delayed, normally I do this in October at the latest but my torn tendons in the left knee and blown out left shoulder made this impossible.

Several dear friends came by to cut firewood for me while I was in crutches and for that, I am tremendously thankful.  Nothing is better than a good family and great friends!  I hope everyone had a happy holiday, by the way.  The low for tonight will be 12º F.  This is not normal for us.  Here is the next 24 hours for us: more snow.

Half of the nation will be warmer than usual tomorrow and half will be colder than normal and as usual, it is my half.  The NOAA gang promised that this winter will be much warmer than usual…for MY half so of course, it isn’t.  And it was supposed to be colder than normal for Arizona and New Mexico.  Again, totally wrong.

NOAA will, of course, declare this the hottest November, ever.  What may be happening is, the cold cycle weather from the Arctic may be shifting its locus so that the cold plunges will first be over the Atlantic Ocean and then shift relentlessly eastwards until it hammers Europe just like in 2011, and so forth.  Fun stuff!

Call Panda and ask her to keep you warm! She usually sleeps next to me when it is this cold. 🙂

Minus 4 F last night supposed to be colder next few days here in North Central BC. This is more like a typical winter from 30 years ago. It’s why I like this part of Canada- close enough to the Pacific to get lots of moderate weather but north enough to get a real winter. Ask me if I’m still grateful in March and I’ll be singing a different tune. Leaves aren’t usually out til May.

Course I’m renting with Gas heat so I’m only one infrastructure failure away from freezing to death. Got me good winter gear though and know half dozen folks with wood heat. Mind you after a major infrastructure failure they might not want any company. I know I wouldn’t.

We have had some chilly weather in Texas, so the leaves are turning:

    Happy T-day, everyone!

Love the pictures of your cozy homestead. The cat is too adorable. We’re gonna have to nickname that place you live, Elaine. Maybe we’ll call it “Meinel Mountain”. cue music from “The Waltons”. 😀

‘it feels like January’. Yes, that is Climate Change. Thanks for the insight into government weather predictions [wrong and intentionally so].

‘The NOAA gang promised that this winter will be much warmer than usual’.
this is Fall. Winter starts in 3 weeks, technically.

Here is the Morbihan the winter is slowly arriving. We had a heady 14C today at the christmas market. We were selling our hard cider and apple juice…and hot mulled juice! 🙂

The temperates will drop this week to near freezing, which will be a good time to press this years apples!

Any cider on my mountain would have frozen some time ago! 🙂 Would have to drink it fast, hot!

What will Winter 2015 be like?

  13. emsnews

If it is like the last three weeks, we are DOOMED and not by being as warm as Cancun, Mexico.

  14. Jim R

Really, Elaine, if you leave that pot of cider out, and let it freeze, it can be a good thing.

Because that last little bit of it that doesn’t freeze, you pour that off and save it. That’s your apple brandy.

  15. emsnews

Yes, that is true with beer, too! 🙂

NOAA just announced this has been the hottest year ever so I would think I would be brewing tea outside like I used to when I lived in the southern deserts years ago.

  16. Jim R

We still brew tea that way. The Southwest remains warm.

If the drought would just go away now..
