Here is a woman astronomer who proves, by existing, that non-white women can be astronomers and get awards and high positions…and she complains about how women don’t have it good in sciences even now. I call BS on this. Look at her! She writes for Huffington Post and lives in a DNC enclave and is invited all over the planet to talk about all sorts of things. And she is very, very PC perfect, too.
Her FQXi – Foundational Questions Institute is showered with money. Where are the barriers? What is preventing her from doing absolutely anything she wants? She knows the answer: it is all pushed towards her eagerly. I pity any white male who studies cosmology and astronomy. Their chances of landing a job means being at the very back of the line or nothing.
How is physics done? Not just the work of writing down equations, or aligning optics, or reducing data, but the manner in which we develop our questions and interpret our results.
I dread where all this is going. My mother and grandmother were both astronomers and my mother and all us kids were all raised in observatories. We knew other women astronomers. It was an interesting world to grow up inside.
The endeavor of knowledge seeking within physics has a specific framework that has built up over centuries, grown out of the societies in which we live. Recent events in the community, as well as long standing problems with the exclusion of minorities, have made it clear that we require a new way to approach our roles as observers of the natural world.
One of the earliest black astronomers in California is a black man who I barely remember who my grandfather, in the 19th century, took under his wing and trained. I met him at my grandmother’s funeral but I was only a child of 7 and can’t recall his name.
Feminist standpoint theory successfully postulates a relationship between science, technology, and colonialism. Yet, most of this work has been done by researchers outside of the field of Physics.
YIKES. This is the SJW tripe in triple! And this ‘work’ certainly was done outside the field of Physics, it comes from the political stewpots of our top schools that are rapidly degrading.
Recently, the PI has introduced an intersectional framework for postcolonial community building in astronomy. Our proposal builds on these ideas to ask: How do the physics/astronomy communities conceive of observers and what is a framework for reconstituting “observer” in a way that acknowledges people who exist outside of the Enlightenment framework? How might this change knowledge production in science?
OMG, ‘intersectional framework’ is code for ‘destroy science.’ This is pure Madame Maoism! That is what this great ‘scientist’ is doing. She has an extremely privileged position with everyone petting her and raining money on her head while she aims square at destroying science and reality in pursuit of race/sex warfare.
It’s 2017, and people are still debating whether or not women are intellectually inferior to men, and whether we are entitled to a workplace that isn’t toxic to people simply based on their gender and sex.
The people I see being persecuted are white men. They are being literally driven to the wall, crushed, destroyed as gangs of radicals scream at them to shut up and go away. It is scary as all hell.
The Google employee memo about the apparent harms of diversity policies in Silicon Valley is both a shocking news story for the general public and for many women and gender minorities—especially of color—working in science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and medicine, a banal sign of normalcy.
She is directly responsible for destroying science. She thinks she is fixing something that is broken. But I assure everyone, she is the vandal hard at work to destroy science and to enslave others while she rules over us in a very undemocratic way. She is…a bully.
It is impossible to consider this field of science without grappling with the flaws of the institution—and of the deification—of science itself.
This budding Madame Mao believes that we should chuck out ‘science’ and replace it with ‘feelings’. This is highly dangerous.
For example: It was argued to me this week that the Google memo failed to constitute hostile behavior because it cited peer-reviewed articles that suggest women have different brains.
That poor man, coding his heart out, was trying to explain why so few women liked coding work: it is BORING and requires a lot of ‘detached thinking’ so you don’t go nuts. I used to build computer chip prototypes. These had to be perfect. It was tedious, annoying work. I listened to classical music so I wouldn’t go nuts.
The well-known scientist who made this comment to me is both a woman and someone who knows quite well that “peer-reviewed” and “correct” are not interchangeable terms. This brings us to the question that many have grappled with this week. It’s 2017, and to some extent scientific literature still supports a patriarchal view that ranks a man’s intellect above a woman’s.
How ridiculous. My grandmother, my mother, my godmother were all scientists who were published. And went to many meetings and conventions all over the planet. Mrs. Mitchner, my godmother, even had a famous family member, a novelist. She was tons of fun and explored nature all over the planet and began publishing in the 1890s.
Where is all this persecution complex stuff coming from? It baffles me. These women today get a royal carpet rolled out to walk on and most, after a flurry, run off and do something else because…THIS CAN BE BORING. Imagine spending night after night like my grandmother, drawing pictures of Mars as she peered through the Yerkes Observatory telescope back in 1910?
Most saliently in the context of the Google memo, our scientific educations almost never talk about the invention of whiteness and the invention of race in tandem with the early scientific method which placed a high value on taxonomies—which unsurprisingly and almost certainly not coincidentally supported prevailing social views.
EH??? ‘Whiteness’ is yes, a modern term to refer to Europeans. Back in 1600, people from Sicily were considered ‘dark’ and people from Sweden, ‘pale’. They were far more picky about ‘race’ way back then. Actually, and I come from the lower nobility in Europe, ALL peasants were considered to be ‘black’ because they were sunburned due to working outside much of the time!
Namely, anyone with a tanned skin was ‘dark’. White came from wearing full robes all the time, even in summer.
The standard history of science that is taught to budding scientists is that during the Enlightenment, Europe went from the dark ages to, well, being enlightened by a more progressive mindset characterized by objective “science.” It is the rare scientific education that includes a simultaneous conversation about the rise of violent, imperialist globalization during the same time period.
Um…this stupid reporter and the lady being interviewed are…ignorant of history. In the 1400’s-1600’s, the Turks invaded Eastern Europe. They destroyed the last of the Eastern Roman Empire called Byzantium. The Turks who were ‘dark skinned’ from Central Asia, were very violent and very imperialist and had science, too.
I bet these two know exactly nothing about that time period and all the actions going on back then! Islam and Christianity were clashing all over the planet and they plowed over everyone in their paths. And this coincides with China cutting off contact with everyone due to fear of both Islam and Christians.
Very few curricula acknowledge that some European scientific “discoveries” were in fact collations of borrowed indigenous knowledge. And far too many universally call technology progress while failing to acknowledge that it has left us in a dangerously warmed climate.
These two sentences are utter, total lies. It infuriates me greatly. And ends with a warning about ‘global warming’ which has ceased due to the sun leaving a very active cycle and entering a quiet cycle.
This shows that the female being foisted on us as some genius isn’t so smart. Why? Well…..one of the activities my mommy and grandma did a lot was…draw sun spot activity! This is why my family said, in publications going way back in time, that the sun regulates the earth’s temperature and the sun isn’t ‘steady state’ but vacillates in output which is why…we are having more and more Ice Ages and sudden Interglacials.
The female in this story is a ‘true believer’ of whatever wretched belief the Borg comes up with which is why she is worried about being cooked instead of frozen. This is particularly irritating to me. There are a number of women scientists being punished and chased off of university positions due to saying that it isn’t global warming anymore.
And this one gets to roll onwards, happily puking out the propaganda with nary a though crossing her brain. Oh, here is the Google search for ‘famous American astronomers’: note that many are black and women or the same pictures of three or four white males, three of liberals like Carl Sagan who used to be my babysitter at Yerkes Observatory 60 years ago.
