Earthquakes All Over America

During the last two weeks, a number of earthquakes happened across the entire nation.  Indeed, this fall we have seen far more earthquakes than any time in the last 15 years that I have been observing this online.  I greatly appreciate the IRIS Seismic Monitor online maps.  I just clicked on that site to see that there was yet another 4.6 quake on the border of Washington/Canada region!

.

This continues to astonish me and further, there is little mention in the news that our entire continent seems to suddenly become quite active.  South America’s west coast has been very active lately, too, for about the last year and a half.  The Caribbean basin has been extremely active ever since the Haiti earthquake.

.

The Pacific rim has always been highly active but for the last five years, it has been hyperactive in the extreme.  Only Africa and Australia have been quiet, Australia is the most quiet, it sails northwards at a high speed, relatively speaking, serene and happy while the entire eastern Pacific is folded, bent and blown up by volcanos due to the northward path of this continent.

As we see here, California, which was significantly quieter just five years ago, is shaking like crazy, not huge jerks but a constant tremor.  Significant 4.0+ quakes are happening more and more frequently as well as a significant series of 7.0 quakes in the southern end of the San Andreas system.  Note how quakes are happening out at sea and deep into Nevada, too!  On either side of the frozen sector of the central San Andreas fault line, we see many small quakes which to me, seems a warning sign, stresses are being released all over the place but not to stop the San Andreas movement but as a herald of what is pending in the near, not distant, future.

From this week:  Earthquake shakes Chadron in Montana, while 3 earthquakes hit NW Georgia, but no need to worry, scientist says ΩΩΩΩΩΩΩΩΩΩΩ

.

The biggest-ever recorded earthquake in the area was a 4.6 magnitude tremor in Fort Payne, Ala., in 2003, just across the Georgia-Alabama state line from Chattooga County, he said.

.

And the latest tremors felt here pale in comparison to the Aug. 23, 5.9-magnitude shake centered in north-central Virginia — something Gray called “a total fluke, because that’s not a seismically active area.”…Asked if metro Atlanta residents should be concerned about earthquakes, Gray said, “Absolutely not. … The mountains in this area haven’t been active in a major way in 300 million years.”

.

The latest tremors “are all perfectly normal,” he said. “We’re not in an area where there are continents colliding and causing earthquakes, as in Turkey or California.”

.

Seismic Monitor Events List Window

This is just the list of 4.0+ quakes, not all quakes!  The assurances to the people of Georgia that they have nothing to worry about is strange since this is NOT ‘normal’ at all, this is continental in nature and signifies that something is going to shift in a big way, somewhere.  I have watched the earth daily for quite a while and I have noticed how, if a place has been totally or mainly quiet for a long, long time and then there is this smattering of small quakes and then the rate of this rises, suddenly there is a huge quake.

.

Of course, the area where Australia is shoving into have this all the time!  But not the continental US.  As the scientists in Georgia noted, we are not being crowded by any continents, our continent has been merrily sailing westwards for a long, long time, leaving Europe and Africa to the east as the Atlantic rift widens.

.

But this shoves us over the Pacific plate as well as several smaller plates along the California/Oregon/Washington coast.  There are stresses that build up over the entire continent and dead center, like in South America’s Amazon drain, Africa’s Congo, there is this sagging center of the continent in the Mississippi valley.

.

That one has some of the worst quakes in the US, by far.  These quakes are felt across the entire eastern half of the nation and can be as great as any offshore of Japan or Indonesia.  There is a great deal to fear in this matter!  The refusal to really prepare for the inevitable Great Mississippi Quake is due to wishful thinking, not rational anticipation.

    Earthquakes are down over 50% from last year in and area which includes CA, NV & Pacific NW incl oceanic area where plates are subducting under OR & WA …

    Mag 2+
    Earthquakes= 2604 Date Range: 2010/01/01 to 2010/12/31
    Earthquakes= 940 Date Range: 2011/01/01 to 2011/12/31 [to Sun Nov 20 00:34:18 2011]

    Mag 4+
    Earthquakes= 268 Date Range: 2010/01/01 to 2010/12/31
    Earthquakes= 80 Date Range: 2011/01/01 to 2011/12/31 [to Sun Nov 20 00:27:01 2011]

    Area searched:
    Latitude: 49.000N – 30.000N
    Longitude: 114.000W – 134.000W

    Area shown on map, with all quakes over Mag 2.0 …

    I have a lot more data and info, but WP fails to post it in comment section.

    PART II
    For the world as a whole, there is a good site for getting an idea of quakes vrs time, although one must understand the terms used and the limitations of the historical data used, in order to avoid faulty conclusions.

    Quakes by year, world, mag 6+, Number, nonlinearly smoothed:
    http://is.gd/tBLiVa

    Quakes by year, world, mag 6+, Total Strength, nonlinearly smoothed:
    http://is.gd/C6WXHf

    Quakes by year, world, mag 3+, Number, nonlinearly smoothed:
    http://is.gd/fyF5bC

    Quakes by year, world, mag 7+, Number, nonlinearly smoothed:
    http://is.gd/0WaNJe

    Quakes by month, world, mag 4+, Number, nonlinearly smoothed:
    http://is.gd/OwWL5x

    From the data for the world quakes, above, it appears to me that quakes have increased radically over the past several years from earlier years going back over 2 decades. But next year, if there is no huge Honshu-type quake, with all it’s huge number of subsequent quakes, then the quake charts by both magnitude and number are likely to fall sharply, in my estimation.

    From the monthly chart, above, it appears quakes have been decreasing in number in the past few months, not increasing. That is for world-wide quakes. For specific areas, as always, there will be exceptions to the predominant trend.

    PART III
    Now for CA, a specific area which you mention, quakes can be found for any time periods by using a grid search for an area over at USGS: http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eqarchives/epic/epic_rect.php

    I did that USGS search for a large rectangular area which included primarily CA and up to the northern US border, for the past 10 years for (1) quakes gt mag 2.0 and (2) quakes gt mag 4.0. That grid included Nevada, but excluded Yellowstone area. In addition, the left border of the grid was extended over the ocean to include the plates off of the northwest US which are subducting under WA & OR.

    There was a huge increase in the number of quakes last year, 2010, but a similar huge fall-off this year for both categories of quakes: M2+ and M4+. Data as follows …
